Educational guide explaining GLP-1 and weight management

How Do GLP-1 Medicines Help With Weight Management?

Diennet Institute

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone naturally produced in the gut after eating. It is involved in satiety signalling, glucose-dependent insulin secretion, glucagon regulation and gastric emptying.

Natural GLP-1 and GLP-1 medicines are not the same thing

Prescription GLP-1 receptor agonists are medicines designed to activate the GLP-1 receptor for longer than the body's naturally occurring hormone. Evidence from clinical trials of these medicines cannot automatically be applied to foods, supplements or lifestyle products that refer to GLP-1.

How prescription GLP-1 medicines can affect weight

Depending on the medicine and the person, GLP-1 receptor agonists can reduce appetite and energy intake and can lead to clinically meaningful weight loss when used for an appropriate licensed indication. Results vary, and treatment is usually combined with nutrition, movement and behavioural support.

Why medical supervision matters

These medicines can cause adverse effects and are not suitable for everyone. A prescriber should review medical history, current medicines, contraindications, treatment goals and the need for monitoring. Dose escalation should follow the specific product guidance.

Protecting muscle during weight loss

When body weight falls, some lean tissue may also be lost. Resistance exercise, adequate nutrition and an individualized protein intake can help support muscle and function where clinically appropriate.

GLP-1 and midlife

For people navigating midlife or menopause, weight is influenced by more than one pathway. Ageing, activity, sleep, muscle mass, dietary intake and menopause-related changes in body-fat distribution can all contribute.

What can be said about GLP-1 supplements?

A supplement should be judged on its specific ingredients, doses and evidence. Describing the role of natural GLP-1 in the body is not proof that a supplement raises GLP-1 or mimics prescription medicine.
